Well-known enterprises including ByteDance and JD.com have settled in the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center, and ZIGTOO valves safeguard the stable operation of the project.
  • By the end of 2022, nearly 20 well-known enterprises had settled in the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center, including ByteDance, JD.com, Yichan Industrial Investment Group, Hubei Chutianyun Network, Hubei Xunhui Technology, Guangzhou Yinglan Technology, Three Gorges Star Future, Suyun Technology, and others. As a major project actively integrated into the national "East Data, West Computing" strategy, it is also China's first large-scale green zero-carbon data center. ZIGTOO Valves provides a full range of safe and energy-saving solutions for the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center.

Where the Three Gorges of Badong end, a vast view opens to the nine rivers.
Located in Yichang City, Hubei Province — a hub known as "a thoroughfare to nine provinces" — the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Data Center benefits from the nearby Gezhouba Dam, the Three Gorges Project, and four giant hydropower stations on the Jinsha River. It enjoys unique geographical advantages, high-standard security, and an abundant supply of clean energy.
Covering an area of 100,000 square meters, the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Data Center plans to build approximately 26,400 cabinets with a total investment of 5.5 billion yuan, to be constructed in three phases. Upon full completion, it will become the largest data center cluster in central China.
The first phase, which has been put into operation, involves a total investment of 845 million yuan and includes 4,400 cabinets with a construction area of 40,000 square meters. It consists of one data center equipment building, one communication command building, and one 35kV substation. Construction commenced in February 2021, and the first batch of cabinets was officially put into operation in November of the same year.
The project has achieved connectivity between the national trunk transmission networks of China's four major telecom operators — China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom and China Broadcasting Network — and the eight national integrated computing power network hub nodes. It supports a data computing capacity of one billion times per millisecond, earning its reputation as a veritable "super calculator".
Through the "high-speed network" of computing power, it extends from the invisible digital space to visible real-life scenarios, serving all aspects of people's daily lives. The first phase of the project consumes more than 200 million kWh of electricity annually, all supplied by clean hydropower from the Three Gorges. Meanwhile, the adoption of a river water cooling system greatly reduces energy consumption and improves the energy efficiency of the data center.

    A Peak Debut

The first phase of the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Data Center, which has been completed and put into operation, is located on the right bank of the Three Gorges Dam area, with a straight-line distance of 3.6 kilometers from the Three Gorges Dam.

While providing secure and reliable digital infrastructure, it strives to become a critical storage base for important national data, serving as a veritable custodian of national data.

Upon completion, the project was included by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in the List of Typical Cases of National New-Type Data Centers (2021).

How can a data center cluster with an annual power consumption of 200 million kWh achieve zero carbon emissions?
Data shows that China's data centers consumed 204.5 billion kWh of electricity in 2020, accounting for 2.7% of total national social electricity consumption. For data centers, IT and cooling systems are the primary energy consumers, typically responsible for 85% of total energy use.
As the data center industry enters a phase of large-scale construction, effectively reducing energy consumption and controlling carbon emissions has become one of the most pressing challenges. The secret to achieving zero carbon emissions at the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Data Center lies in two key aspects:first, the data center is powered entirely by clean energy from the Three Gorges Corporation;second, it makes full use of natural cooling sources based on local conditions to lower energy consumption.

A fine nest attracts golden phoenixes.
Since its launch, the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center has attracted nearly 20 renowned enterprises with its meticulous management, efficient operation and maintenance, green performance, and high-quality services. These enterprises include ByteDance, JD.com, Yichang Industrial Investment Group, Hubei Chutianyun Network, Hubei Xunhui Technology, Guangzhou Yinglan Technology, Three Gorges Star Future, Suyun Technology, and others. At present, nearly 3,000 cabinets have been leased, representing an overall cabinet occupancy rate of nearly 70%.
In June 2022, ByteDance and JD.com successively leased cabinets at the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center.Bao Xiaoxu, Regional General Manager of ByteDance in Hubei, stated that as one of the transmission and data sharing hubs for the national “East Data, West Computing” project, the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center enjoys unique advantages in reducing data latency, cutting transmission costs, making full use of clean energy, and ensuring a reliable power supply. Choosing to “settle down” at the Three Gorges has brought them remarkable benefits.Manager Yang of JD.com’s Hubei branch noted that the company will strengthen cooperation in the future by leasing more cabinets, accelerate the construction of JD.com’s central China hub node, and embrace a new stage of rapid development.
It is reported that shortly after the first phase of the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center was put into operation, it was awarded the Class A Data Center Certificate by the China Quality Certification Center (CQC), marking that the data center has passed the latest and highest national-level data center certification.
Today, at the Three Gorges Dongyemiao Big Data Center, green electricity is converted into green computing power, supporting the surging wave of the digital economy. While facilitating the leapfrog development of the local digital industry and the full green transformation of economic and social development, it provides a strong pillar for the high-quality and sustainable development of the digital economy in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and across the country.
“Upon full completion, the Dongyemiao Big Data Center will become the largest data center cluster in central China, providing secure and efficient data storage and powerful computing support for the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt,” said Jin Heping, Chief Information Officer of the Three Gorges Corporation.
